Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (Playhouse)

Contemporary opinions of the new theatre building differed widely at the time. The playhouse created by the Düsseldorf architect Bernhard Pfau was one of the last great theatre buildings after the War.

Planning had begun in 1959, after the municipality had rebuilt the former operetta house on Jahnstraße, against all expert advice, in the beginning of the Fifties. It remained a makeshift arrangement throughout.

However, more than a decade was to go by before the new playhouse was opened. Not surprising that during this time building costs rose considerably and finally amounted to 40 million DM.
